S.A.B. Radio x Jesse Boykins III Interview

October 22nd, 2010 § 1 Comment

This will be blasted out to the major blogs tomorrow, but dropping it here first. Enjoy. Jesse spoke about training under Bilal, music and spirituality, meeting Theophilus London, upcoming Love Apparatus album, and more.

The night Jesse came to perform at the Middle East, October 6th, was great. I went in. Hosted, basically coordinated the show, took show footage, and interviewed. It was cool to be a part of the creation process, bringing in some of the acts, co-designing the flier (that I wasn’t hyper proud of, but the customer is always right), and helping fulfill the goals of a young, black female promoter who was taking a big risk by tackling a scene mainly dominated by white males in this city.

More interviews, and hopefully more show opportunities coming in the future.

Excited to finally return with an actual podcast! The past few weeks I’ve had to create makeshift compilations, as opposed to a live recording of the show, because of technical issues with recording the show at the station. Still having issues with recording, but, my cousin Khalifa came up in the clutch and was able to record it for me, so here it is for you. A dope mix of music and discussion witty banter per usual, and I gave away tickets to see Mayer Hawthorne at Paradise (dope show by the way). The podcasts will continue to drop on Wednesdays, and the live show airs from 8-10pm EST on Mondays, you can stream it live from here.

My Homework..

October 18th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Is greater than yours.

Plenty of great flicks chilling on my hard drive. However, I have footage/an interview to edit, a bathroom to clean, and some jeans to find in this pigsty sorry excuse for a room I’m in right now. Photos can wait.

The Classics

October 13th, 2010 § 2 Comments

Exactly where I’m at right now. What I’ve aspired to for some time now, but now it’s a commitment. You should give your personal best every time, but your aim should be higher and higher each time, in order to soar new heights. Just to put things into perspective, and how things work, for every one engineer produced in the US, there’s 7 times that coming from China and India. Not a perfect example, but I hope you caught the gist.

Yes, I filed this under the “Inspired” category. Yes, this is a tweet from me. Yes, I inspire myself sometimes. Well, no, not really. What I experience inspires me.

We Could Learn A Thing or Two From Desmond Tutu

October 13th, 2010 § 2 Comments

When don’t men of influence appear dapper?

79-year-old, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa on what retirement looks like for him: “Now I will have time to serve her hot chocolate in bed in the mornings, as any doting husband should…” Powerful stuff, a man who’s done so much, and has so much influence within a nation, just wants to sit back and relax with his wife. As it should be. I’m sure he’s done his fair share of neglecting her, given all of things he’s been called upon to do.

Every time I read or learn about great men, I wonder about the role their female companions played, particularly the strains their lifestyles must have placed upon their relationships. Coltrane and Naima, then Alice. Martin Luther King, Jr. was rumored to have a lot of extra-marital affairs, but his relationship with Coretta. Barack and Michelle Obama. That may sound sexist if you read into it wrong, I’m not simply calling them tag-a-longs on the path to greatness, for it takes an equally, or even more powerful woman to support a man. I’m sure these men found their companions as sources of strength, and inspiration for their work. (It wasn’t some big peachy flower-fest, but the lesser known Betty Davis, who inspired the sound and title of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, also comes to mind).

Tutu was a leading figure in the anti-apartheid movement, and played a crucial role in the trials afterward, moving people toward focusing on forgiveness, rather than the ills committed under apartheid. After holding multiple positions, advocating for human rights globally, writing several books, and heading a large HIV/AIDS clinic—the man deserves to relax, and enjoy his retirement from public life. « Read the rest of this entry »

This Is Where I’ve Been…

October 9th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

I’m wading in this. Felt like I was drowning in it earlier, but I’m good now.

Sometimes when I look at how full my plate can get, and how tired things leave me, I wish I was doing what everyone else is doing. What’s shown above, doesn’t even include the schoolwork stuff I have going on (that I need to focus on, starting tomorrow). Better to be busy than not busy though.

This week was insane, hosting an event for the first time (where I also interviewed artists and took show footage), tutoring local high school kids for the first time, pulling the weight of others in group projects, and it goes on-and-on (no Ms. Badu). It all deserves a recap, but probably won’t get one. I’m backed up, and still owe two recaps from South Africa! I appreciate your eyes reading these words and this blog, but I’m paying less attention here, to make more things happen for the bigger site project, and the future. Trying to push forward, while still being pulled back by your other responsibilities, makes you feel like you’re on a treadmill, or caught inside some sort of celestial vacuum. Thank God, I lightened my load a bit, or it would’ve resulted in a net zero.

I’ve been working a lot (at my job), and saving up to make my January plans happen, that I’ll be announcing soon enough. It’s nice to finally be getting a check again, but I’m living pretty much like when I had no income—extremely frugal. I’ve been here twice before – emergency save mode – so I’m familiar with the territory. Hopefully soon I’ll be hired as a supervisor soon so I can make more money in the process, and help my savings goals become a reality sooner.

*Le sigh*

R.I.P. Satoshi Kon (Commemorative Paprika Screening)

October 6th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

I wasn’t even aware the acclaimed anime director passed away, this past August 24th, 2010, until I saw that there was a special commemorative screening of his film Paprika. It’s part of the GSIFF New York 2010 International Film Festival (which runs from October 7th through October 17th). I didn’t get a chance to experience any Tribeca film festivals when I was in NYC, but if you’re in a position to, I highly recommend you support the Paprika screening on Wednesday, October 13th.

GSIFF’s site describes Kon’s Paprika as “Inception on acid,” and I say that’s a fair description of it. I really enjoyed the film, and now plan to catch up and watch another classic from him, Perfect Blue. I’m glad people are taking the time to honor the contributions Kon gave to the world; he had a surreal style all his own. I also really enjoyed the Paranoia Agent series he did in 2004, which was in rotation on Adult Swim back in 2005. In my opinion, he was one of the only directors still working that could hold a flame to fellow legend Hayao Miyazaki. He’ll surely be missed.

PAPRIKA SCREENING

WHEN: Wednesday, October 13th. 9:30pm

WHERE: NYC, Tribeca Cinemas, 54 Varick St.

Tickets are available here.

Drake- “I Get Lonely Too”

October 5th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

I’ve always been sparing in terms of posting music on the site—mainly from this blog stemming from a class, and out of respect for my professor, and not posting intellectual property. The concept of leaks – especially with how they fuel urban music – isn’t something everyone understands. But I made an acception in the case of this record from Drake. Mainly because I’ve been feeling lonely as of late, and had a conversation about these feelings the other day.

This is produced by his main man, and other musical half, Noah “40″ Shebib; it’ll be featured on Drizzy’s upcoming, all R&B mixtape, It’s Never Enough. I love that it’s squeaky clean, but still a sexy record. It’s reminiscent of  old school R&B (personal fave New Edition comes to mind), stuff that you could play inside a car full of kids without worrying it’s too much for their ears, but more than suitable for the bedroom and baby-making.
